The Clarks Summit Fire Co. will be hosting a blood drive on Saturday September 10, 2011 from 10 am till 4 pm at 321 Bedford St., Clarks Summit, PA 18411 (get directions). Together with the Red Cross, we ask that you please join us in memory of all those who gave their lives on 9-11-2001 and in honor of those who serve and protect us every day.

Engine 4, Ladder 4, and Ambulance 4-9 assisted Station 2 (Chinchilla) on the 2nd Alarm Structure Fire. Crews arrived to find a working fire at a 150' x 300' 2 story horse barn. Crews used master streams and aerial devices to extinguish the bulk of the fire. After the bulk of the fire was knocked down, heavy equipment was brought in to tear through the metal and debris. Rescue 4 stood by at Station 4 for any further calls in the Abingtons. Crews operated on scene for approx 6 hours.

Rescue crews were dispatched to School Street in Clarks Summit for the Cat stuck in a tree. Crews arrived on scene to find on feline approx 30 feet up in a tree. Crews threw a 35' extension ladder to the tree and extricated the cat from the tree.

Rescue and EMS crews ran three motor vehicle crashes over the weekend, all on Abington Road. Rescue 4 and Ambulance 4-9 were summoned to the first wreck late Saturday morning for a car versus a telephone pole. There were no injuries and required minimal rescue services. The second occurred Saturday afternoon on South Abington Road near CVS pharmacy. 4-9 evaluated several patients but obtained several refusals while Rescue 4 blocked traffic. The third wreck occurred Sunday afternoon on North Abington Road and also required minimal Rescue and EMS services.

The First Alarm Structure Box was dispatched for Cherry Hill Road in Newton for the reported smell of wires burning in the residence. Chief 8 arrived on scene and reported a moderate smoke condition in the structure. Engine 8 (Newton-Ransom) arrived first due and discovered the working basement fire. The Engine 8 crew knocked down the fire with preconnected hoseline. Ladder 4 overhauled the basement and checked for extension with the Thermal Imaging Camera while Engine 4 was returned to service. Crews operated for approx 30 minutes.

Rescue 4, Ambulance 4-9,and Rescue 2 (Chinchilla) assisted Station 5 (Dalton) on Ledgewood Drive in Waverly for the patient unresponsive in the basement of a building who was overcome by toxic fumes. Crews identified the chemical, ventilated, and wore respiratory protection to extricate the patient from the building. Crews operated on scene for approx 40 minutes.

 
Structure Box Puts Early End to Training PDF Print E-mail

Training came to early end Monday night. Engine 4 and Squad 4 were at Abington Heights Middle School practicing hoseline management when the First Alarm Structure Box was hit for Carnation Drive in Clarks Summit. Comm Center reported that the caller heard crackling noises and can now smell smoke. Chief 4A arrived with Squad 4, Engine 4, and Rescue 4. Crews checked the interior and exterior of the structure with the Thermal Imaging Cameras and found the source to be a faulty heating unit in the basement. Crews isolated the unit and controlled the power. Crews operated on scene for approx 15 minutes.

Rescue 4 and Ambulance 2-8 (Chinchilla) were dispatched to the Pennstar Bank on East Grove Street in Clarks Green for the vehicle through a retaining wall. Chief 4 arrived and reported on vehicle through a retaining wall resting against a tree with the driver out of the vehicle. On the other side of the tree was a 100' drop into a creek. Rescue 4 arrived and stabilized the vehicle while 2-8 assessed the patient. Crews waited on scene until the vehicle was removed and returned to service.

 
Two Afternoon Wrecks in the Summit PDF Print E-mail

Rescue 4 and 4-9 were dispatched to South State and Grove Street for the Motor Vehicle Accident with one patient stuck in the vehicle. Chief 4A arrived on scene with Rescue 4 and 4-9 to find both vehicles off the road with no injuries and no confinement. 4-9 handled two patient refusals. While Chief 4 was responding to the first accident, he came upon a vehicle over the embankment on North State in front of the Community Bank with 2 patients unresponsive in the vehicle. Rescue 4 quickly cleared the first wreck and responded to North State Street along with Ambulances 2-8 (Chinchilla), 5-9 (Dalton), CLS 3 and CLS 7 (paramedics). Rescue 4 arrived and initially took both lanes of traffic to protect the scene. Rescue crews stabilized the vehicle, assisted EMS crews packaging patients, and controlled hazards. With the patients extricated and hazards controlled, Rescue 4 remained on scene with Chief 4 until the vehicle was removed from the scene.

Spring Storms once again caused the Abingtons to become busy with calls on Thursday night. While Station 2 was operating on a Fire Alarm in the township, a structure box was hit for Stoney Creek Road in South Abington for the house struck by lightning. Ladder 4 and Rescue 4 were on the assignment. Rescue 4 arrived first and checked the structure with Engine 2. The Ladder 4 crew staged outside the building per Command 2. Crews reported no fire and command was terminated. Crews also responded to numerous trees and wires down calls throughout the evening.
